Amy Winehouse, an English singer and songwriter, known for her deep, expressive, contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul, rhythm and blues, and jazz, died much too young.
Amy's parents strongly influenced her interest in jazz. Her father often sang Frank Sinatra songs to her, and whenever she got into trouble at school, she would sing “Fly Me to the Moon" before entering the principal’s office.
She loved 1960s girl groups and fashioned her style after them. Amy borrowed her beehive hairdo and her Cleopatra makeup from the Ronettes. Her imitation was so successful that it helped catapult her to the top of the music scene.
Winehouse's debut album, “Frank”, was released in 2003. Most of the songs were co-written by her.
Winehouse released her follow-up album, “Back to Black” in 2006. It became an international success and one of the best-selling albums in UK history. Her next most memorable and acclaimed hit was “Rehab.” It reflected her own personal struggles with drug and alcohol addiction.
Winehouse's dual public image and artistic success was always confronted by her deep personal turmoil. The media attention was intense regarding her private life, and the comments were strongly worded.
She was described as "a filthy-mouthed, down-to-earth diva” or "a perfect storm of sex kitten, raw talent and poor impulse control.”
At the age of 24, with six Grammy nominations, Amy Winehouse was crashing headfirst into success and despair. With toxic family issues looming large in her life, and her own questionable judgement, the negative emotional and physical impact was taking its toll.
As her star was rising, haute fashion designers began copying her disheveled style and gaunt thinness, which they marketed to the elite, proclaiming Amy Winehouse the new Bardot.
Amy Winehouse was raised Jewish and expressed pride in being Jewish, although she was not religious. During one interview, Amy said "being Jewish to me is about being together as a real family. It's not about lighting candles and saying a bracha.”
She died of alcohol poisoning at the age of 27.
She will always shine brightly In Heaven with the Stars.
