Elvis Aaron Presley was an American singer and actor who died at the age of 42. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as "the King of Rock and Roll", or simply, "the King”.
It was a shock to all of his fans to learn that Elvis Presley had seriously abused drugs and his body was suffering from multiple ailments including glaucoma, high blood pressure, liver damage and an enlarged colon. The cause of death was recorded as cardiac arrest but it should be noted that his autopsy showed fourteen drugs in his system with ten in significant quantities.
Presley received his first guitar when he was 11 years old. He learned to play and sing; he gained no formal musical training but had an innate natural talent and could easily pick up music. Presley played guitar, bass, and piano. While he couldn't read or write music and had no formal lessons, he was a natural musician and played everything by ear. Presley often played an instrument on his recordings and produced his own music.
Elvis Presley came from humble beginnings. He was born in a two-room house in 1935 and performed with his parents at camps and church meetings in his childhood. After graduating from high school, he drove a truck. He began his music career in 1954 and became a national sensation in 1956 with his first hit “Heartbreak Hotel”, quickly followed by “Don’t Be Cruel”, “Hound Dog”, “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Love Me Tender.”
In December 1957, Mr. Presley was drafted into the United States Army and in 1967 he married the sweet and shy ingenue Priscilla Beaulieu. They had a child in 1968, Lisa Marie. The marriage ended in divorce in 1973. Even today, the charismatic, Elvis Presley is remembered as giving Rock n Roll its style and leaving a permanent mark on the nation’s musical consciousness.
Elvis will always remain a working-class hero, a man who arose from obscurity to transform American culture and music only to be destroyed by his own fame and fortune.
