Lamont Dozier was a hugely influential American singer, songwriter, and record producer as the master craftsman of Motown in Detroit, Michigan.
As one third of the Holland-Dozier-Holland song-writing trio, he wrote for Diana Ross, the Four Tops, and Martha and the Vandellas, to name a few.
Their collaborative songwriting offered a message of love as an inescapable blend of agony and ecstasy, that was repeated many times in their greatest hits.
A few of their best are “Heatwave,” “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Reflections,” “Band of Gold,” “Give Me Just a Little More Time,” “I Can’t Help Myself,” “Baby Love,” and “Baby I Need Your Loving.”
Lamont Dozier described their successful songwriting this way:
“We realized quite early that we wrote mostly love songs or songs about unrequited love, mostly for women, and their plight with boyfriends. It was beginning to sound a bit moody, so we decided to add a feelgood thing. We got with the band and really made them play things that were up. We were determined to make it feel optimistic, in spite of the story in the song. So, we ended up with quite dark lyrics and uplifting, cheerful music, and that became our style: making lemonade out of lemons. I think that’s why the songs have lasted, all around the world.”
Beautiful music by Lamont Dozier, forever In Heaven with the Stars.
