Michael Jackson, called the king of pop, died at the age of fifty in his Los Angeles home of cardiac arrest resulting from an excessive amount of prescription drugs. He was a singer, songwriter, and dancer, beginning his career at the age of six as part of The Jackson Five. He was the eighth child of the Jackson family, and made his debut singing with his four older brothers.
His music videos, which included Beat It, Thriller, and Billie Jean, elevated this medium into an art form. His signature dance moves, the Moonwalk, and the Robot propelled his career to the realm of artistic genius and pop culture icon. Even though he had no formal music training and could not read music or write music notation, his songs became wildly recognized and popular.
He was well known as an eccentric with a dark side. He experimented with drugs, unique medical treatments, plastic surgery, and cosmetics. The combination of these, and his excessive use, added significantly to his early death. He leaves behind three children and two ex-wives, one of which is Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie.
He began life humbly, in a two-bedroom house, as one of ten children in a working-class, African-American family. Michael describes his youth as lonely and isolated. He began slowly breaking away from the Jackson Five to establish a record-breaking solo career becoming a leader in dance moves, fashion trends, and raising global awareness of social issues emphasizing racial integration and environmentalism.
Michael Jackson’s life is the quintessentially American tale of celebrity and excess that catapulted the musical boy wonder into a global pop superstar, only to have his dark side, haunted by lawsuits, scandals, failed plastic surgeries, and unhealthy behaviors consume him and end his life too soon.
