Paul Newman’s life was a rich combination of excitement and exhilaration – from an acclaimed American actor, film director, race-car driver, philanthropist, to a very successful entrepreneur.
As an award-winning actor, his films are legendary and include such classics as “Exodus,”“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “The Hustler,” “Cool Hand Luke,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Sting,” and “The Color of Money.”
He had a passion for auto racing, and was a frequent competitor in the sport. He was also well known for his philanthropic work starting with “The Hole in the Wall Gang,” a residential summer camp for seriously ill children in Connecticut. The camps can now be found in other areas in the U.S., Ireland, France, and Israel.
Paul Newman went on to successfully market his own salad-dressing recipe. This was the beginning of an entire line of food products, branded as “Newman’s Own.” The company has a policy that all proceeds, after taxes, are donated to charity.
Even though it appeared that his life was perfect, he faced many challenges that included a failed first marriage, a son that died of a drug overdose, and his own struggles with alcohol and cigarettes.
His second marriage, to actress Joanne Woodward, lasted fifty years. Paul Newman attributes its success to a combination of “lust, respect, patience, and determination” and his wife noted that, after the physical attraction, the most important element was humor – Paul could always make her laugh.
Paul Newman died of lung cancer, peacefully, at his home in Connecticut.
A life well lived – always In Heaven with the Stars.
