Sir Sean Connery best known for originating the beloved role of the British secret agent James Bond in movies. The Scottish actor had a career that lasted nearly 60 years, most of which he spent playing a variety of “man’s man” roles — from suave spies to violent brutes.
Whether as James Bond or Indiana Jones’s father, the Scottish star played the man’s man with an earthy sexiness, that came through all of his performances.
Connery became an international star with a musical highland burr and awe-inspiring physicality that immediately drew the eyes and ears of female and male audiences, even when he was playing opposite some of the most accomplished and attractive performers of his generation. He was voted by People magazine as the "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1989 and the "Sexiest Man of the Century" in 1999.
His movies go beyond James Bond (though there are several iconic 007 adventures – Dr. No, Goldfinger, and Thunderball) and each one illustrates how Sean Connery commanded the screen, from his roguish youth to his distinguished latter years.
Connery’s favorite Bond film was From Russia with Love, even thoughhe was almost killed filming the helicopter chase scene when the inexperienced helicopter pilot flew in too close and almost decapitated him. In 1946, at the age of 16, Connery joined the Royal Navy, during which time he acquired two tattoos. Connery's official website says "unlike many tattoos, his were not frivolous – his tattoos reflect two of his lifelong commitments: his family and Scotland. Connery began bodybuilding at the age of 18, and was a keen footballer but ultimately chose acting as his career.
Connery began acting in smaller theatre and television productions until his breakout role as Bond. Although he did not enjoy the off-screen attention the role gave him, the success of the Bond films brought Connery many notable film offers including Marnie, The Man Who Would Be King, The Untouchables, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and The Hunt for Red October.
In his final years, Sean Connery had dementia and it took it’s toll on him. His final wish was to slip away peacefully with no fuss.
At the age of 90 Sean Connery is forever In Heaven with the Stars.
